چکیده

Buckling is investigated of a long thin cylindrical shell under longitudinal compression as modelled by the von KK armm an{Donnell equations. Evidence is reviewed for the buckling being localised to some portion of the axial length. In accordance with this observed behaviour the equations are rst approximated circumferentially by a Galerkin procedure, whereupon cross-symmetric homoclinic solutions of the resulting system of ordinary diierential equations are sought in the axial direction. Results are compared with experimental and other numerical data. Excellent agreement with experiments is achieved with fewer circumferential modes than other methods.

Vibration and Critical Speed of Axially loaded Rotating Orthotropic Cylindrical Shells

In this paper, classical thin shell theory is used to analyze vibration and critical speed of simply supported rotating orthotropic cylindrical shell. The effects of centrifugal and Coriolis forces due to the rotation are considered in the present for‌mulation.. In addition, axial load is applied on cylinder as a ratio of critical buckling load. Finally the effects of orthotropic ratio, materia...

Structural Optimization and Form-finding of Cylindrical Shells for Targeted Elastic Postbuckling Response

This paper presents a finite element based numerical study on controlling the postbuckling behavior of thin-walled cylindrical shells under axial compression. With the increasing interest of various disciplines for harnessing elastic instabilities in materials and mechanical systems, the postbuckling behavior of thin-walled cylindrical shells may have a new role to design materials and structur...

Optimization of an Axially Compressed Ring and Stringer Stiffened Cylindrical Shell with a General Buckling Modal Imperfection

PANDA2, a computer program for the minimum-weight design of elastic perfect and imperfect stiffened cylindrical panels and shells under multiple sets of combined loads, is used to obtain optimum designs of uniformly axially compressed elastic internal T-ring and external T-stringer stiffened cylindrical shells with initial imperfections in the form of the general buckling mode. The optimum desi...

Advances in Shell Buckling: Theory and Experiments

In a recent feature article in this journal, coauthored by Gert van der Heijden, I described the static-dynamic analogy and its role in understanding the localized post-buckling of shell-like structures, looking exclusively at integrable systems. We showed the true significance of the Maxwell energy criterion load in predicting the sudden onset of “shock sensitivity” to lateral disturbances. Th...
